Who never ate his bread with tears,
Who never, through nocturnal hours,
Bewailed a bed of cares and fears:
He knows you not, you heavenly powers.

You lead us hither, to this life
And leave the man of meager worth
To stray, condemned to pain and strife,
For all debts shall be paid on Earth.
